Super Soaker Shotgun: Randy Smith Converted Water Gun Into 20-Gauge Weapon, Cops Say

The Huffington Post  |  By Posted: Updated: 05/23/2012 10:09 am

This is hardly child's play: Randy Smith, 54, was reportedly found walking the streets of Fresno, Calif., Saturday night, carrying a Super Soaker that he had converted into a 20-gauge shotgun, according to KMPH.

Normally cops wouldn't raise an eyebrow at someone waltzing around town with one of a high-powered plastic water guns, but an uptick in toy-to-gun conversions made officers more suspicious of Smith.

They stopped him and found that he had indeed fashioned a powerful weapon out of $30 worth of parts.

"He took the Super Soaker apart, was able to fashion a barrel to where he was able to make what's considered a zip gun, where you can fire one round through it. In this case it was a 20-gauge shotgun shell," Fresno Police Sgt. Mark Hudson told the station.

But as NBC pointed out, the conversion isn't just illegal, it's dangerous for the manufacturer. Makeshift barrels can explode under pressure, sending shrapnel and gunpowder flying.

"So they're just relying on, maybe this [gun barrel] will hold up. Well, you could be putting a gun next to your head, or you could be putting a hand grenade next to your head," Hudson said.

Smith was arrested Saturday night and released Sunday on gun-related charges. He's been in and out of prison since 1994, police said.

Sgt Mark Hudson and Bill Mayfield don't know what they're talking about.

Smokeless gunpowder isn't an explosive, it's a propellant. Only black powder is an explosive. That's one of the reason why smokeless powder replaced it..

Only a fool would use plumbing pipe when you can just buy and use an actual shotgun barrel. A barrel is not a gun and anyone can buy one. You can buy steel that will contain the rearward expansion of the shot shell when it's fired. Firearms manufacturers do so, you can as well. A piece of tubing that slides over the butt end of the barrel and a solid piece of steel rod to plug it with welded into the end of the tube with a firing pin in the center of it.

Zipgun is a made up term that has no meaning.

A shotgun is legal if it has a barrel length that meets the minimum legal requirement of 18 inches and and overall length of 26 inches. If it has a folding stock, that OAL is with the stock fully extended. Homemade makes no difference. Use a barrel that several inches longer to be on the safe side of the law. 24" is a common length.

If it needs to be registered in your locality, then register it..

Want a shotgun with a barrel length shorter than the minimum legal length, and it's legal by state and local law, pay the $200 tax and it's NFA legal.

"...but an uptick in toy-to-gun conversions made officers more suspicious of Smith."

All by his lonesome, this American "genius" justifies Charlette NC's ban on water guns.

Eh, the water gun just contributed to looks. He could have still built the gun without the water gun.

What a fool. If your going to carry a gun at least have something you can work with without killing yourself.I'd love to see him fire it.

So, he's good to go? You walk around with a loaded, converted gun and you just get to go home the next day?

This demonstrates why citizens need to be armed. It's so easy to make a weapon that a released felon can be armed within hours of being released. So we should assume they all are. That's why the rest of us law abiding citizens need to be able to defend ourselves and each other.

That's what the 2nd amendment is about. ALWAYS being in a position to be able defend ourselves from enemies foreign and domestic.

Would of be even more impressive if it was a full auto high powered rifle with a grenade launcher.
But in all seriousness, this guy is really stupid. What's next? Hand grenade cabbage patch kids?

There are not many parts to a single shot firearm,
you just need the proper metal.

See, this is just another reason why we need FULL and NATIONAL water gun registration NOW!

Yeah, lets make guns illegal, then the only people with weapons will be criminals and idiots or in this case both. Good game plan.

Exactly, hasn't worked out too well for Mexico now has it (for those who don't know, they have extremely strict gun laws, so when the cartel show up to cut the heads off of a group of citizens, they can't defend themselves). I'm with you, a responsible gun owner, I hope to God that I never ever have to use it against a person, but having it leaves me a free man.

Y'know, back when the Soviets were in Afghanistan, Pakistani craftsmen were hand-making just about every firearm under the sun, usually turning out a better product than what was produced in factories.

The Anti-Gun fanatics think that this sort of fool is all that will be around if they get their desires. They have no idea how easy a REAL gun would be to make, rather than something like this disaster-waiting-to-happen.
