'American Idol' Finale: Ace Young Surprises Diana DeGarmo With On-Stage Marriage Proposal (VIDEO)

A Surprise Marriage Proposal On The 'American Idol' Finale

"American Idol" (Wed., 8 p.m. ET on Fox) asked fans to have long memories with one of the bigger surprises of the night. The show has always had a friendly relationship with its alumni, but it was pretty clear that most fans weren't completely clear who the smiling couple was in the audience. Neither of them won their respective seasons, though Diana DeGarmo did come in second to Fantasia Barrino in the third season.

That said, the slimmed down singer did look a lot different all these years later. Her beau, fifth season finalist Ace Young, was more recognizable to long-time fans, though he'd grown his hair out. DeGarmo and Young had fallen in love during their work on Broadway.

Ryan Seacrest invited them on stage, saying that it was because they were adorable, but it quickly became clear that Young had something up his sleeve. And in his pocket. In a pre-planned moment that DeGarmo didn't expect, Seacrest dimmed the lights and Young got down on one knee. His proposal even had dramatic pauses in it like he was auditioning for Seacrest's job.

For the record, she said yes as the audience clapped politely, although most of the younger people clearly had no idea who these people were or why this was a big deal. Young and DeGarmo are the first official "Idol" couple. How long before they bring forth the first "Idol" baby?

"American Idol" will return for its 12th season in early 2013 on Fox.
