Echo Park Stabbing of 2 Young Men May Be Anti-Gay Hate Crime

Anti-Gay Hate Crime In Echo Park?

Two men in their mid-20s were stabbed in Echo Park Thursday. The assault may have been a gay hate crime, according to a blogger on "Your Friend, Savannah."

The victims were approached as they waited for a bus near Echo Park and Montana Avenues at about midnight, police told Eastsider LA.

The suspects, a male and female in their early 20s, began yelling "You guys are fucking f*ggots," before the male suspect stabbed one victim in the rib cage and the other in the stomach, said Lt. Gutierrez to the Eastsider. The victims said they had seen the suspects earlier that night at Sunset Beer, an Echo Park beer store with a bar and lounge.

"Your Friend, Savannah" wrote that the victims, who are also her friends, are not gay. "Neither are gay, but are straight allies, are vocal for gay rights, and wear rainbow patches and buttons on occasion," she wrote. The Tumblr has more:

Brian was stabbed in his stomach, right above his belly button. He is alive and discharged, as this luckily didn’t hit anything vital. Our other friend (name withheld) was stabbed in his hip, so hard, it fractured his pelvis. He is still recovering in the hospital.

Police identified both the suspects and victims as Latino, according to the Eastsider. They ask anyone with any information to call Northeast Division detectives at (323) 344-5731.

"Your Friend, Savannah" also asks Tumblr readers to reblog her post to get the word out about the attack.

The incident occurs about a month after a 21-year-old was tragically shot in Echo Park. Etsael Cardneas, Jr. was shot while listening to music in his parked car, as he often did, on Kensington Road, LA Weekly reported.
