Derrick Salberg Catch: Lower Columbia College Player Jumps Wall For Game-Ending Play (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

It looks like we have another catch incredible enough to earn its own definite article. Remember Endy Chavez's home run-robbery in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS dubbed "The Catch"? Now, imagine if Chavez had actually leaped over the wall at Shea Stadium to make that grab.

That's more or less what Lower Columbia College outfielder Derrick Salberg did in the first round of the NWAACC Baseball Championships against Everett on Friday. Salberg's Red Devils were clinging to a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth. Everett had a man on base with two away when Keone Kela crushed one to deep left.

Salberg ran back to the warning track, leaped over the wall and made the catch in mid-air. Game over. Red Devils win.

"By far the best catch I've ever made," Salberg said after the win, via The Daily News Online. "I was waiting for the bullpen pitchers to tell me I was getting close to the fence. Thank God I didn't run into the fence, and I've got some hops."

The catch made SportsCenter's No. 1 play on Friday night.

Of course, fans of a certain age many not want to hear Salberg's grab or even Chavez's epic snag being referred to as "The Catch." For many, the only play that should ever go by that name occurred in the vast expanse of the Polo Grounds during Game 1 of the 1954 World Series.
