More than 17,000 healthy or treatable animals were killed in Los Angeles shelters last year. And while City Council members and Angelenos come together to make Los Angeles a No-Kill City, there are still tens of thousands of animals that are already in shelters and sanctuaries that need homes now.

In honor of National Hug Your Cat Day, HuffPost LA is featuring local cats that are available for adoption as a part of our Los Angeles Animal Rescue series. Check out 10 friendly felines from our local Best Friends Animal Shelter that are in need of a home. For more information on adoption please visit the How To Adopt section of the Best Friends website.

  • Bridgette

Bridgette Time at shelter: 17 weeks Age: 5 years Breed: Domestic Medium Hair This black tortie found her way to Best Friends with a heart full of love, but a coat full of mats. Upon arrival, Bridget went straight to the "salon" for a lion cut, now donning a hairless body with a fluffy face, booties, and tip of tail. Although naps seem to be her favorite past-time, Bridget finds pleasure playing with her felt mouse whenever the urge strikes. Moreover, she adores being held upside down by her paws, as you scratch her belly. Bridget looks forward to a calm home, and warm lap to curl up in.

  • Sabrina

Sabrina Time at shelter: 17 weeks Age: 2 years Breed: Domestic Shorthair Mix Because of her friendly disposition from the get-go, Sabrina arrived at the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center ready to make friends. This spunky tortie has an insatiable appetite for fun. When she's not pulling all of the toys out of her hamper, she invites her cat friend Samantha to engage in friendly, occasionally vigorous, competitive games. With a fondness for adults and kids alike, Sabrina will be a vibrant addition to any family. Don't forget, as with all Best Friends pets, she's already spayed, vaccinated, and micro chipped.

  • Edith

Edith Time at shelter: 11 weeks Age: 2 years Breed: Domestic Shorthair During her early days at the Center, Edith suffered from extreme shyness and fear of people. Through special attention and lots of TLC, Edith now finds ease in human companionship. She is low-key and doesn't demand interaction, but is an excellent playmate when engaged. Even better, she appears impervious to dogs. This bowlegged lady would be the perfect office cat to keep your feet warm as you spend time at computer. Nonetheless, if you have a comfy couch and an occasional spare hand to pet her, Edith is your girl.

  • Gladys

Gladys Time at shelter: 10 weeks Age: 8 years Breed: Domestic Longhair Mix "Gladys Night" is a polite and quiet domestic longhair. While she has a lot to give, she does not demand the spotlight. Gladys is very responsive to affection, but easily entertains herself on her cat tower, or by rolling around in her cat nip. Gladys tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), however she does not show signs of any health issues. Despite many misconceptions, cats with FIV can live long, joyful, and healthy lives. She is spayed, vaccinated, eating well, and poised to be your most soulful companion. Gladys was recently featured in a video from The Pet Collective. Check it out here.

  • Thomas

Thomas Time at shelter: 8 weeks Age: 3 years Breed: Domestic Longhair Mix This black and white gentleman is a staff favorite. Thomas' good looks and pleasant nature already won him a home, but his adopter was distraught to return him due to allergies. Confident in his ability to find another home, Thomas spends his days as aiming to please. He loves to play by lunging around, and reserves what energy he has left for intimidating dogs whenever the opportunity strikes. Still, Thomas is ready for his forever home and share his even-tempered way of life with you.

  • Beth

Beth Time at shelter: 18 weeks Age: 6 years Breed: Domestic Shorthair Mix At the outset of her life at the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center, Beth could only be found hiding in the nooks and crannies of the "CATopia" free roaming cat room. Since coming in to her curious and confident nature, Beth now owns the entire expanse of the room. When not nestled in the perch by the window or indulging in her food, she begs her best cat friend Riley to play tag. Beth's ideal home would be dog and kid-free, but full of many opportunities for loving scratches and pettings.

  • Bonnie

Bonnie Time at shelter: 11 weeks Age: 8 years Breed: Domestic Shorthair Mix After being surrendered by their owner, Bonnie and her sister Fiona arrived at Best Friends Pet Adoption Center in good health. They remained together in the free roaming room, but Bonnie always took a back seat to her sis. However, once Fiona journeyed onto a new home, Bonnie took center stage. She is very vocal and does well with other cats, effortlessly forging friendships with her roommates. Unaffected by most people and activity, Bonnie would do just fine with a busy home and family life.

  • BooBoo

BooBoo Time at shelter: 5 weeks Age: 9 years Breed: Siamese/Domestic Medium hair Mix Booboo is a big, blue-eyed love bug. Due to an unrelenting cold during the first few weeks at the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center, Booboo is just now feeling well enough to show his personality. He adores people, especially when they rub his head. With the wisdom of age, Booboo also understands the importance of dinnertime; he patiently waits by the door until his meal is served. This handsome man is very laid back due to his age, so would be a great addition in a home with kids, dogs, and other cats.

  • Roman

Roman Time at shelter: 4 weeks Age: 2 years Breed: Maine Coon Mix Despite being a little under the weather when he first arrived, this handsome devil is a heartbreaker, and knows it. Roman keeps his eye on the prize: being in your arms. He will even reach up to have you pick him up. Beyond his requests for affection, he can't get enough of the laser pointer, which is a great way to indulge his frisky temperament. Roman is very well rounded, does well with other cats, and will catch your attention in any setting.
