Colorado's 2012 Free Fishing Weekend Is On For June 2,3

Heeere fishy fishy fishy: Fish For Free This Weekend

Fishing for something fun to do this weekend? Something outdoorsy, yet relaxed? Grab a six pack and head for the water, folks, because a bunch of trout want to see what you're made of.

This weekend, the first of June, marks the Colorado Division of Wildlife's annual Free Fishing Weekend. No need to buy a fishing license to wet your line.

"Fishing is one of Colorado's most important outdoor traditions and a great way to hook kids on healthy outdoor recreation," said Greg Gerlich, aquatic section manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife in a press release. "Free fishing weekend also gives anglers who haven't fished for a while a chance to reconnect with the simple pleasure of being on the water."

Even though licenses aren't required, all other regulations are in effect (bag limits, weight limits, etc). For a handy map of kid-friendly fishing spots, we recommend this interactive map. And for non-kids, here's the latest breakdown of state-approved fishing areas.

Can't make it out this weekend? No worries - annual licenses only cost $26, or if you're aged 65 and older they're only $1.

According to the release, Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks more than 3 million catchable-sized trout and 14 million trout fingerlings each year. The agency also stocks more than 64 million warm-water fry and fingerlings around the state each year. Fully half of the 85 million fish produced by Colorado's hatchery system are planted in state park waters each year.
