Faith Wilson, Texas Girl, Relies On Diabetic Alert Dog, Ruby, To Detect Blood Sugar Levels (VIDEO)

Mom Sarah Wilson considers Ruby part of the family.

The diabetic alert dog came into her daughter's life about two years ago. And Wilson is confident 3-year-old Faith, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 9 months old, wouldn't be alive without her, KLTV reports.

Ruby is trained to detect when Faith's blood sugar falls below 100 or above 180.

The girl's blood sugar levels can fluctuate to dangerous levels about 30 times per day, Wilson told KDAF last year.

The first night the Wilsons spent the night with Ruby, the pup alerted Sarah four times, Wilson told the station.

When sugar levels drop, the body releases a faint scent comparable to nail polish remover, ABC News explains. Dogs like Ruby are trained to detect the odor and take action by alerting the owner, or in this case, the owner's mother.

According to DiabeticAlertDog,com, there are several centers throughout the nation that breed and/or train dogs to provide this type of service.

However, diabetic alert dogs often come with a hefty price tag of about $10,000, KLTV notes.

Although Ruby has been hailed as a hero by the Wilson family, the dog isn't the first to make headlines in recent months for helping a child in need.

Earlier this year, goldennoodle puppy Mister Gibbs garnered media attention for helping Alida Knobloch with her heavy oxygen tank.

The dog was trained to follow around the enthusiastic 3-year-old, who has neuroendocrine hyperplasia in infancy (NEHI), a rare lung condition that makes it difficult to breathe.

The pair often take the playground and the swings, where Mister Gibbs keeps a watchful eye with the oxygen tanks strapped to his back.
