Asus Taichi: Laptop-Tablet Hybrid Debuts At Computex 2012 (VIDEO)

Why choose between a laptop computer and a tablet when you can combine both into one? Asus Taichi, a new line from the Taiwanese computer hardware and electronic company, offers just that -- a laptop-tablet hybrid.

Recently debuted ahead of Computex 2012 in Taipei, the Taichi is a thin 13.3-inch or 11.6-inch laptop with a secondary display on the back of the lid. When closed, the laptop functions as a tablet, but with the lid opened both screens can be used independently, enabling same-time sharing with a friend.

Asus Taichi is reportedly as thin as the company's Zenbook line, measuring less than one inch, and the two LCD displays both offer 1920x1080 pixels.

Other features include an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor, 4GB of RAM, SSD storage, two USB 3.0 ports and dual cameras -- a five-megapixel rear camera and front-facing HD camera. Pricing and availability for the Asus Taichi is not yet available.

Asus also revealed its Transformer AiO during the Computex pre-show. The all-in-one PC doubles as a tablet as well and is capable of running both Windows 8 and Android software.

Asus may not be the first company to offer a laptop-tablet hybrid, however its two products have made a big splash at Computex 2012, and the internationally recognized computer show hasn't even gotten into full swing.

Asus's counterpart Acer also revealed its own line of ultrabooks, blending the functionality and usability of handheld tablets with laptop computers. The laptop-tablet hybrid appears to be a growing trend in the industry.

However, it's a trend not all tech heavyweights have capitalized on. During an Apple Q2 earning calls, CEO Tim Cook spoke of the downside of converge products, stating: "Anything can be forced to converge, but it's all about trade-offs."
