Baby Zebra Born At Cincinnati Zoo (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Anyone who hasn't yet seen a Grevy zebra should stop by the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.

That's where they're celebrating the birth of a baby girl zebra who was born on Wednesday, May 23, weighing in at a healthy 103 pounds. The last time a baby zebra was born at the zoo was in 2009.

The animal was named Savanna after people were invited to vote via Facebook on four possible names nominated by zookeepers.

"This has been an exciting year for Zoo Babies," Thane Maynard, the zoo's executive director, said in a press statement. "We started with the birth of our Bactrian camel, 'Bogart,' and we're ending the month with a beautiful zebra foal."

Grevy's zebras are the largest of the zebra species and can grow up to 10 feet long weighing over 1000 pounds, according to the African Wildlife Foundation.

According to National Geographic, Grevy's zebras munch on leaves and grass while grazing in their natural habitat of the savannahs and scrublands of Eastern Africa and socialize with other zebras instead of traveling in large herds like common zebras.

The species is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which says hunting and habitat loss have caused the population in the wild, now less than 2,500, to decline by more than 50 percent the past 18 years.

There are 167 Grevy's zebras at 40 North American zoos, according to the Cincinnati Community Press.
