Amateurs. A web site should never store passwords. What should be stored is a one-way hash of the password. In less jargon this means that the password is transformed into a number (the hash) which is saved, not the password itself. The hash is one-way, meaning that the password cannot be recreated from it. When the user logs in it's the hashes that are compared, not the actual passwords. If someone steals the hashes, they have nothing of value.

This is by no means everything that should be done to ensure user privacy and security, but it is a start at the minimum.

I refused to join LinkedIn in spite of friends and associates asking me to, because of privacy and security concerns. The same issues apply to Facebook. In a perfect world, becoming a member may have benign implications, but in the rekl world, you're just asking for trouble.

Told you so. When you put your personal information on the web you are exposed to every criminal organization in the world. If large corporate banks can be victimized so can you.
