The Best Chocolate Chips For Baking Cookies (PHOTOS)

What would chocolate chip cookies be without chocolate chips? If it wasn't for Ruth Wakefield, who in 1937 chopped up a Nestle chocolate bar to make her special Toll House cookies, Nestle never would have gotten the idea to produce the chips, which launched in 1941. Since then, chocolate chips have become essential for chocolate chip cookies and many other recipes like brownies and cakes.

But chocolate chips have transformed over time. Not only do chips come in semisweet, they're also available in bittersweet, white and many flavorings like peanut butter, butterscotch and more. There are even different shapes and sizes, such chunks and minis. Or if you choose the gourmet route, you can find chocolate in different disc shapes, which are typically used by chocolate makers. See all the different chocolates you could use in chocolate chip cookies in the slideshow below -- you can even combine two or more of each to get a very unique cookie. Vote in the slideshow for your favorite.

Semisweet, Bittersweet And Milk Chocolate Chips

The classic chocolate chip cookie wouldn't be complete without chocolate chips. Most recipes call for semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips, because they hold their shape well during baking. (Semisweet has half as much sugar as dark chocolate and bittersweet has one-third as much.) Milk chocolate chips don't work well in cookies recipes because they melt too fast due to the fact that they contain milk powder -- save them for recipes that call for melted chocolate.

I use Nestle Milk Chocolate Chips for cookies all the time and have never had a problem with them. I've actually gotten many a marriage proposal after handing out my cookies.

Maybe I'm just good at working with milk chocolate.

Hershey's Dark Chocolate morsels make that absolute BEST chocolate chip cookies! Just use the recipe on the back of the bag. They are RIDICULOUSLY good! Everyone that we serve them to think that there is some big secret family recipe behind them. They are surprised to find that it's nothing more than the Hershey's dark chips. They can be a little difficult to find. HEB usually carries them and Wel-Mart seasonally. Well worth the hunt and investment!

My son is highly allergic to all nuts and nut products so I have to be really careful what ingredients go into my cookies. Sadly, the only chocolate chips I can use are my local store brand which is Kroger. This is because all the name brands are marked with "processed in a facility that also processes nuts" or some such warning. Kroger's products are great though but I'm wishing we had more variety.....

The two keys to making quality chocolate chip cookies is to use real butter and REAL chocolate chips(not chocolate "flavored" chips).

A nice twist is to mix butterscotch with chocolate chips but not too many as it will over power the chocolate.

Dark chocolate chips make the best chocolate chip cookies.

So, the flavor of the chocolate has nothing to do with the suitability for use? Just the melting characteristics?

Weird.

The reason milk chocolate chips do not work well in chocolate chip cookies isn't because they melt too fast it is because they are too sweet and do not impart the proper chocolate flavor to the cookies. If you mix only a few of them with other kinds of chips it might be ok, but used by themselves the results will not be good.

Milk chocolate sucks, it's too sweet and it's for children. CHILD!

Agreed. It's dominant flavor is sugar, not chocolate. Which kind of defeats the purpose of eating chocolate.

Baker's Chocolate is the best for making chocolate cream pies, and German Chocolate Cake, ....from scratch of course,......they are to die for.
