Charlize Theron On Sketchy Charity Auction Date: 'Rich People Can Be Creeps'

Actress Charlize Theron is charitable -- but only to a certain point, she says.

The "Snow White and the Huntsman" actress, 36, told Conan O'Brien Wednesday that recently auctioning herself off for charity was a sketchy experience.

“I went to dinner with a strange man," Theron recalled. "I made two of my girlfriends go and sit at the restaurant while I was there. The closer I got [to the date], I was like, this could actually turn out really bad, like rich people can be creeps, too! They can rape.”

And though her heart may have been in the right place -- Theron said she won't be fooled again.

"They trick you with the 'People are suffering' thing," she said, the audience laughing. "They trick you with the 'You can help so many people,' and you fall for it."

The actress from South Africa also said her one "weird" charity date wouldn't keep her from giving to causes close to her heart.

"Look, I would rather just give the money [to charity]," Theron said. "It was a scary thing. And [the guy] was weird!"

Theron is the director of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program, which funds a South African nonprofit that provides HIV/AIDS testing, preventive education, health screening, counseling and more.
