Mike Nichols Wins Tony Award For 'Death Of A Salesman'

'The Graduate' Director Wins His 9th Tony

Mike Nichols won best director of a play at the Tony's Sunday night, for Arthur Miller's "Death Of A Salesman." Nichols teared up while thanking the all-star cast of his revival, which includes Philip Seymour Hoffman and Andrew Garfield. Nichols' wife, newscaster Diane Sawyer, looked on lovingly from her seat.

The wrap-it-up music rushed him through his thoughts on Miller's classic:

There's not a person in this theater that doesn't know what it is to be a salesman. to be way out there in the blue riding on a smile and a shoeshine. And as we know, a salesman has got to dream. It goes with the territory.

Nichols is most well-known for his films "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" "Working Girl" and his Oscar-winning film "The Graduate." He's a member of the coveted EGOT club, having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. "Death of a Salesman" is his ninth Tony win and sixth for direction of a play or musical.
