Allen West Releases First Reelection Ad

U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) released his first reelection campaign advertisement on Monday, a spot filled with patriotic imagery in which he pledges to fix a "broken" Washington.

West also highlights his humble roots and military service to bolster his image.

"I ran for the United States Congress for one reason –- to continue my service to the country I love," West says in the ad. He adds that this is a "country that gave a child from Atlanta's inner-city the opportunity to live the American dream."

“Some say I push too hard, that I ask too much," West says. "My response -- I’m just getting started. That’s the American way.”

Since his rise to prominence as a Tea Party darling following his 2010 election, West has been a lightning rod for controversy due to his provocative rhetoric and far-right policy positions. Last month he claimed that as many as 80 House Democrats are "communists."

In February, West announced that he was seeking reelection in Florida's 18th congressional district, rather than the 22nd, where he currently serves. West decided to run in a new district after a GOP redistricting plan made his already Democratic-leaning district even more tilted against him.
