Aimee Copeland, Woman With Flesh-Eating Disease Improves

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A Georgia woman battling a flesh-eating disease is slowly improving and her father said Tuesday she should be out of intensive care soon.

Doctors Hospital of Augusta said Aimee Copeland's condition has changed from critical to serious. Serious condition indicates a patient is still acutely ill and has unstable vital signs.

The 24-year-old graduate student developed necrotizing fasciitis after cutting her leg in a fall May 1 from a homemade zip line. Her left leg, other foot and both hands have been amputated.

Her father, Andy Copeland, said doctors believe his daughter should be out of intensive care and ready to move into the hospital's rehabilitation clinic in two or three weeks.

"She's going to have to learn to use prosthetic limbs," he said. "But the critical-care phase, I believe, has come to an end."

He said one doctor who had expected her to spend months in intensive care is "blown away by her rate of progress."

Andy Copeland said his daughter has been talking with her doctors about using meditation and other holistic techniques to manage her pain instead of drugs. He said it's a topic she had been researching for her master's thesis.

"She went through one of the dressing changes without any kind of pain medication at all the other day," he said. "It's incredible. She chose to meditate through it."

What a shame, They should have put her in hyperbaric chamber in the very beginning. I have known that that can help the infection. I really think the drs. are stupid.
Hyperbaric is used for many infections, wound healing, osteomylitis which is bone infection, soft tissue necrotic infection...WHAT BIG SHAME. Several yrs ago there was an outbreak of nec. fasculits which is really Strep A infection, very fast moving.
There was an article in nspr. a young boy from Chicago they gave many hyperbaric treatments & he improved. If they would have done that early perhaps she would not have had the amputation. One track mind doctors.

No. I don't think one single prayer helped her in any way........she is using meditation as a strength of mind over matter.......she herself is determined to survive and continue her life for a very long time. I'm sorry that you don't think it is possible to use concentration to aid in healing one's self, yet praying is logical to you. She is indeed a strong person, not many have the fortitude to continue on in the face of such a horrible ordeal and I do wish her a very long and happy life....

I commend her, because so many meds have awful side effects. Pain killers are addictive and can make the patient weak, depressed and irritable. This young lady does not need any of those symptoms. "You can do anything, if you put your mind to it", as the song goes.

Aimee Copeland, The girl the young lady the true spirit of will and strength the person so many should be looking up to and every young person out there who has or is going through a traumatic experience America applauds you and adores all you young people. So many give in to such little things in life and hurt others or themselves then there is young people like you that come along and give reason and cause to why we should always keep our chin up and our hopes strong until the end or the path of a new beginning where everything changes but you Aimee show and give cause to why we can always make a new path give that hope and strength that all people should come to cling to.
Aimee Copeland, stay strong never give in never weaken or have doubt America is with you, but most of all your loved there with you are depending on you more than you are of them. For you are,

Beautiful girl. I feel that "homemade" and "zip line" should never go together. Dont you agree. Lets save the "homemade for pies and leave the zip line construction to the pros. Mmmmm k ?
