One of Detroit's most venerable arts institutions and one of the city's burgeoning grassroots arts projects have received grants totaling more than $500,000 from ArtPlace, a national coalition of foundations, banks and federal agencies.

To be announced today, the grants include $268,500 to the Detroit Institute of Arts for a Cultural Living Room Project that promises to enlist local design firms to help the museum rethink some of its indoor and outdoor spaces.
