Ulises Grajales, Mexico Mayoral Candidate, Arrested In Rival Edgardo Hernandez's Shooting

Posted: Updated:

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico -- Police in southern Mexico have arrested a mayoral candidate for the former ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party for the shooting death of a member of a rival party.

Detective Mario Gonzalez says candidate Ulises Grajales was found after a manhunt in connection with the shooting death of Edgardo Hernandez from the conservative National Action Party.

Grajales' party has cancelled his candidacy.

Gonzalez said Tuesday that Grajales is being held at prosecutors' offices in the capital of the southern state of Chiapas pending charges.

Hernandez was putting up posters for President Felipe Calderon's conservative party when the mayoral candidate started following his vehicle and, witnesses say, opened fire.

Because he has not yet been charged, Grajales did not have a lawyer of record.
