ISS Photos: NASA Astronaut Don Pettit's Stunning Long Exposures Of Night Sky

PHOTOS: Earth Luminous In Long-Exposure Shots From ISS

At 17,000 miles per hour, it doesn't take long to make a stunning time lapse of the Earth.

Astronaut Don Pettit snapped the amazing photos below while orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station. The Expedition 31 Flight Engineer's 'Star Trail' photos show a surreal, technicolor skyscape.

To capture these spectacular shots, Pettit took 30-second exposures and then used special software to combine them and make images that show a total of 10 to 15 minutes of movement. His photos showing star trails, auroras, and thunderstorms give a whole new perspective on Earth: an astronaut's-eye-view.
