John McCain: Syrian Rebels Need Our Help

MICHELE SALCEDO   06/17/12 02:16 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain on Sunday characterized the lack of U.S. aid to Syrian rebels as "shameful" and said helping their cause would deal "the greatest blow to Iran in the Middle East in 25 years."

McCain's remarks sought to maintain political pressure on President Barack Obama as violence in the region escalated, forcing a 300-strong U.N. observer mission to call off its patrols. Syrian troops on Sunday intensified shelling of rebel-held neighborhoods in central Homs, according to activists who say humanitarian conditions are growing worse and are pressing for the evacuation of 1,000 endangered families and dozens of wounded people who can't get adequate medical care.

"The fact that the United States of America is not helping these people – and we can – is shameful," McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

So far, the U.S. has refused to arm Syrian rebels in part to avoid a proxy fight with Iran and Russia, which both back the Syrian government.

The crisis is likely to come up Monday when President Barack Obama sits down with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Mexico on the sidelines of meetings between leading rich and developing nations. The U.S. recently accused Russia of equipping the Syrian government with attack helicopters that could be used against civilians, only to later acknowledge that the helicopters were already owned by Syria and being sent back to Russia for repairs.

McCain said the Syrian rebels were facing an "unfair fight now" and reiterated the claim that "Russian shipments are coming in."

The White House called for Assad's ouster when it blamed the Syrian government for the deaths in May of more than 100 people, including 49 children, following peaceful protests. National Security Council spokeswoman Erin Pelton said the attack serves as a "vile testament to an illegitimate regime." The Syrian government denied responsibility.

McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services committee and 2008 GOP presidential nominee, has long advocated for U.S. military support of Syrian rebels, including airstrikes against the regime's forces. In Congress, only McCain's closest Senate colleagues have echoed his plea for military aid with most lawmakers reluctant to drag the U.S. into another conflict.

Go see the Movie The Dictator. It is worth the cost of admission to hear Aladeen Aladeen's speech on what Democracy looks like. He says, Democracy looks like having a government who will lie to you about why it needs to go to war and get you to go and fight it. Democracy looks like a govt who scares the people so it can convince them to agree to policies that are not in their best interests."

@camelias and sweet tea.......You hit it right on the heart of the matter. Adelson ain't spending all that money just to see a repub elected. He wants to assure that Israel has a vote in Congress. Israel is determined, with the help of McCain, Lieberman and that fart in Vegas, Adelson, to start a war, then Israel can sit back and watch Americans die for their cause. Not gonna happen on Obama's watch. Romney becomes president and you can be sure Israel will get the war they are paying for. Anybody that doesn't know that Israel is donating to Romney's campaign is totally stupid

Please tell me why anyone would listen to a man who was so money hungry he took out a marriage license with his current wife while still married to his first wife and living @ home with her?!! Then there was his involvement in the S & L loan schemes back in the 80's, which, without his wife's money, would have sent him to jail. Then this "expert" and tower of wisdom ran for president and picked the almost absolute dumbest person in the world.....Sarah Palin (she is surpassed only by Michelle Bachmann).

This befuddled old warmonger needs to hang it up and go home. He is absolutely pathetic and to think he is in Congress making laws that effect this whole nation. We need term limits immediately.
02:35 AM on 08/03/2012
Why doesn't anyone ever ask this warmonger why he is so gungho to go to war in Syria? I bet an audit of his holdiings would answer that question. And where was he when millions were being slaughtered in Rwanda? Here is his 2008 answer to that one...."McCain isn't so sure armed intervention could have ended the genocide. UN blue-helments who were there disagree." What is the difference in the genocide in Syria and that which continues to this day in Rwanda.

Thank God he lost in 2008 or we would be in 3 or 4 wars. And BTW, where do people get the idea that McCain is some kind of "military expert?" What troops has he commanded or what military strategies has he mapped out? He disobeyed orders as a pilot, was a hot dog flyer, got shot down and spent the rest of the war as a POW. So did thousands of other GI's and they aren't all considered "military experts." McCain is more driven by his investments in that crooked enterprise called Haliburton, Republicans like McCain, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Joe Lieberman's favorite charity. The more time we spend making war, the more money they make.

Why are Republicans always so willing to fight wars for other people, but when our own people need help it's always "personal responsibility" and "government out of our lives" and "do it on your own" and "we can't afford to help" ?

Yes, John. Your buds in the Military Industrial Complex need a new war to test and sell their toys in.
How about the Saudis? Let the Iranians do it. Let the Arabs clean up the Middle East.

Hey McCain, there's been a real war on our southern border for years now. How about sending troops to defend our own country for a change?

Yes, they should end all wars overseas, bring all our troops home, and put them on the southern border to end illegal immigration. Sadly though, that's a great plan that will probably never happen. After all these decades of democrats and republican presidents and members of congress doing NOTHING or very little to secure the border, they're not about to stop illegals now.
And it's not just democrats that want a path to citizenship for illegals. Reagan granted amnesty to 3 million illegals when he was in office, and he said he wanted Canada, the US, and Mexico to open up their borders so people could move between the three countries freely! And GW Bush tried to get congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for illegals, which, ultimately didn't pass.
The fight over what to do with illegals and what to do about securing the border will go on forever it seems, because neither side wants to piss off the hispanic population of voters.

John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham are in a constant state of "Go to War". They have never met a conflict they didn't like. Of course, these are the same three people that visited Ghaddafi in Libya before returning to the US advocating for favored trading status and increased arms sales to Uncle Mo.
02:12 AM on 08/03/2012
You are so correct. When will these people who vote Repub no matter what, wake up. Obama is trying to get us out of ALL war conflicts and McCain can't stand it. All he knows is war, war, war. He is the best reason for term limits!
