Michigan Walmart Shooting: Cops Kill Suspected Shoplifter After He Allegedly Tried To Run Them Over

WATCH: Alleged Walmart Shoplifting Incident Takes Deadly Turn

A routine police call turned deadly at a Woodhaven, Mich. Walmart, when a suspected shoplifter allegedly tried to run over police with a stolen car.

The Detroit Free Press reports that officers arrived at the Allen Road Walmart Tuesday evening after being alerted by the store that a man and woman were involved in a possible shoplifting incident.

Police say the man was holding a screwdriver and refused requests to drop it. Instead, he allegedly hopped into a stolen vehicle and tried to use it as a weapon against officers.

According to a release from the department, the "suspect put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to run over the officer, at which time he struck a patrol unit. The suspect then put the vehicle in drive, attempting to run over a second officer."

Police claim they fired their weapons in an attempt to stop the assault, killing the man.

WXYZ reports that the woman involved in the incident had run away during the confrontation, but was later apprehended by police and is now in custody.

Michigan State Police are now investigating the incident.
