At around $27,000 a pop on average, weddings can be insanely expensive. To cut costs, many couples are taking unconventional steps -- like buying their wedding cakes at the supermarket.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a growing number of brides are turning to stores like Publix and Safeway for their cakes, which cost around $200 to $400 to custom make.

Reporter Alyssa Abkowitz explained to WSJ Live on Tuesday that supermarkets are going above and beyond to carve out a section of the bridal market for their own. They're even working with bridal consultants to incorporate fondant, add monogramming, and expand their flavor offerings.
