Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher surprised fans when his band Beady Eye included two Oasis songs in their set Thursday night. This is the first time Gallagher has publicly played tracks from the Oasis catalog since the band's infamous split in 2009.
Beady Eye -- comprised of former Oasis band members Liam, Gem Archer, Andy Bellplayed and rounded by drummer Chris Sharrock -- performed two Noel Gallagher-penned tracks, "Rock 'N' Roll Star" and "Morning Glory." The band also premiered a new song, written by Liam, titled, "The World's Not Set in Stone."
Earlier this year, Gallagher announced his intention to start singing Oasis material again. "I feel they're just as much my songs as they are Noel's. And if people don't like it, go to the bar or f--k off," he told XFM. "If they do like it, jump up and down, let's have a good time."
"Listen up squares were playing them live not re-recording them so chill," Gallagher tweeted in March, after some Oasis fans criticized the younger Gallagher's decision.
The Gallagher brothers' tumultuous relationship has been making headlines for the last decade. In a 2009 interview with Q magazine, prior to the group's break up, Noel characterised Liam as "rude, arrogant, intimidating and lazy. He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup."
After the group's split, tension between the Gallagher brothers reached an all-time high, when Liam filed a lawsuit against Noel in August 2011, due to certain comments the older Gallagher brother made concerning the Oasis breakup. Liam reportedly told The Sun, "I have taken legal action against Noel Gallagher for statements he made during the Electric Cinema press conference on July 6 during which he claimed Oasis pulled out of the 2009 V Festival Chelmsford gig because I had a hangover. That is a lie and I want Oasis fans, and others who were at V, to know the truth."
Shortly afterward, Noel apologized for his remarks stating, clarifying his earlier comments to NME. "For the record, it is a fact that he was diagnosed with laryngitis and it is a fact that he had a doctor's note to prove it," said Noel in the webcast. "I'd just like to say that if he gets offended by my opinions on such things then I apologize."
Liam Gallagher has since dropped the lawsuit but stated, "There are a few things which need to be sorted out. I didn't want this to happen. It's not nice suing your family but like I said, he was telling porkies for the sake of his mates and journalists to get a wisecrack on me."
While the possibility of a reconciliation looks slim, Noel has expressed his regret over Oasis' 2009 split, suggesting that a hiatus would have been the better option. "In my own head the 2015, 20-year anniversary of (What's the Story) Morning Glory is looming," he said during a 2011 interview with Absolute Radio. "We could have maybe come back, made a new album and played that album in its entirety and gone and been the greatest thing ever, but there you go."
