Chuck Schumer: Republicans Will Lose If They Campaign On Repealing Obamacare

WASHINGTON -- A top Senate Democrat thinks Republicans will lose in the November elections if they campaign on repealing health care reform.

"If Republicans make as their No. 1 issue the repeal of health care, they're certainly going to lose the election in the House and the Senate -- and the presidency," Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

After the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the health care reform law on Thursday, Republicans in Congress renewed their vows to repeal it -- vows they repeated again on Sunday talk shows.

Polls show that while the law is not very popular, a majority of Americans do not favor repealing it.

"The bottom line is most Americans are not for repeal," Schumer continued. "If you look at all the polls, a little more than a third are for repeal; the rest are either for keeping it or changing it but not repealing it. Some of those who are for changing it want to make it tougher."

As a result of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, in 2014 all Americans will be required to buy health insurance and insurance companies will no longer be allowed to refuse to cover people with pre-existing conditions.
