Shedd Aquarium's Baby Dolphin Goes On Public Display (PHOTOS)

The Shedd Aquarium's three-week-old Pacific white-sided dolphin calf makes his public debut Monday, joining his mother Piquet on display at Chicago institution.

The unnamed male calf was born on Memorial day and has since passed several crucial landmarks, including meeting other dolphins, adopting his mother's sleep schedule and visibly gaining weight, according to a release from the aquarium.

After several months of 24-hour care, the aquarium's medical staff says Piquet and her calf are both healthy and doing well.

“The calf continues to grow more each day,” Ted Beattie, Shedd president and CEO said in the release. “We’re delighted to introduce the newest addition to our guests at the aquarium, while working closely with our animal health team as they continue to provide around-the-clock care and observation for the newborn.”

The baby dolphin was fathered by Lii, a male dolphin at the Miami Seaquarium, with whom the Shedd has a cooperative breeding program to help revitalize the struggling species, according to the aquarium. Fewer than 20 Pacific white-sided dolphins are currently living in North American zoos and aquariums.

The aquarium's other most recent addition was an orphaned baby sea otter named Cayucos adopted from California.
