Michelle Moultrie Bunt Becomes 'Inside-The-Park Home Run' After Error In World Cup Of Softball

WATCH: Team USA Bunts For Inside-The-Park Home Run

The rare "quadruple" is arguably the most exciting play in baseball -- or softball. Whether it's a miscalculation by an outfielder, an odd bounce off a wall or merely a well-struck shot to the deepest part of the ballpark, something usually needs to go wrong for the team in the field for a batter to pull off an inside-the-park home run.

On this particular play from the World Cup of Softball, so much went wrong that a bunt attempt somehow resulted in a whirlwind trip around the bases for Michelle Moultrie.

In the fifth inning of the championship game between the United States and Australia on Monday, the outfielder from the University of Florida laid down a bunt with the bases empty. Australia's third baseman picked the ball up quickly but air mailed it over the first baseman's head. It rolled past the glove of the outfielder and all the way to the wall as Moultrie sprinted around the bases and crossed home plate before the ball even reached infield.

The play was ruled an error, as it should have been, not an inside-the-park home run. But it was just as exciting. Team USA would go on to win, 3-0.
