Heaven Sutton Death: Second Person Released With No Charges In 7-Year-Old's Slaying

Second Suspect Released With No Charges In Girl's Shooting Death

Updated story

Two days before a memorial service for a 7-year-old girl who was gunned down in gang crossfire late last month, Chicago police made a second arrest in her slaying.

The Chicago Tribune reports that a 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with the June 27 shooting of Heaven Sutton.

The man was initially reported as allegedly being with the gunman who shot Heaven and a 19-year-old man in the city's Austin neighborhood. Heaven, who was going to be a second grader in the fall, had been playing with friends and helping her mother sell candy and snow cones in front of her family's home in the 1700 block of North Luna at the time of her shooting.

Jerrell Dorsey, 26, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm and ordered held without bond Sunday in Heaven's slaying. Police allege Dorsey is a gang member involved in the ongoing feud between two rival gangs that was responsible for the young girl's death.

Ashake Banks, Heaven's mother, previously expressed frustration that the second offender in the shooting remains at large.

Donations to Heaven's family can be directed to the Heaven On Earth Fund at any area U.S. Bank location.
