Sarah Palin's Shadow Hangs Over Vice Presidential Politics

Despite hints from Ann Romney, wife of likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney, that her husband is considering at least one woman in his vice presidential search, it's unlikely he'll actually a tap a female for the post.

Ann Romney is good for taking on softball questions and buffing up Mitt's image because he is too much of a fossil himself to connect with people. However, if she and the campaign don't want her to venture out into the deep political swamp then her role and talking points need to be spelled out more clearly - and carefully.

Just a few weeks ago Mitt vehemently stated that only he and the head of his search committee head knew who was being considered. Ann has made him out to be a liar. No one is suggesting that his wife shouldn't know. But if she does then either she shouldn't run her mouth about it and campaign on it, or the campaign should expect her to be treated like any other campaign surrogate.

Additionally, she may not be too politically savvy. In her effort to reach out to women and to the Palin faction of the rightwing, stepping on the toes of the campaign that needs to walk a straight line and avoid surprises. She may be nicer, but she is just as out of touch.

Hispanics will not vote for Romney simply because Martinez is a latina. Romney has already made that mistake with Rubio.

Besides, NM is still very blue state, and Bill Richardson is still extremely popular there. He also happens to be one of the best campaigners in America.

I watched Game Change on HBO for the second time and could see why the Romney team is so nervous over the VP pick. Add to that, Bill Kristol's comments on Fox that Romney only has 26% of people believing he can do something about the economy and that he should be worried.... well, any doubts I may of had have completely evaporated. And all those wealthy donors must be having a 'Meg Whitman' moment when they see their own voicing such negative opinions.

I dunno. If I remember correctly, Bill Kristol was one of the mini-guv's biggest cheerleaders. Shows us how much political perspicacity he has. I wouldn't put much stock in his analysis of anything.

I would tend to agree if it was just Krystol, but George Will and other "real" conservatives have been losing faith, too.

They are worried even while the Roves and Kochs of the party blindly and arrogantly believe that more money can overcome anything.
