Bowery Mural Wall: Lady Aiko Takes Over Space From RETNA (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: New Mural At Bowery And Houston

Walking to work this morning, we were struck with a pleasant surprise: Lady Aiko's new mural-in-progress at the intersection of Houston and Bowery.

The new mural is replacing LA-based artist RETNA's artwork which has been on the wall since March.

New Yorkers and tourists alike stopped this morning to snap photos.

Born in Tokyo, Lady Aiko now lives in Brooklyn and is the first female artist to take over the wall. She follows in the footsteps of her previous collaborators Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller who work as the street art collective FAILE. FAILE painted a mural in the same location in 2011. Lady Aiko, who was born Aiko Nakagawaya, was a part of the group from 2000-2006. Since leaving FAILE, she's found success as a solo artist and has had her work exhibited in PS1/MOMA, the Brookyln Museum, and the Museum of Sex's adult street art exhibit.

Check out the photos of the unfinished mural below and keep clicking through for previous murals by Kenny Scarf, Barry McGee, Shephard Fairey, Os Gemeos and Mr. Brainwash, the subject of the 2010 film "Exit Through The Gift Shop."
