Matthew Stafford, ESPY Best Comeback Award-Winner, Dedicates To Detroit

Stafford: This Is For My Teammates And The City Of Detroit

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford accepted an ESPY Wednesday night with gratitude, modesty and a shoutout to the city.

At the 20th ESPY Awards ceremony highlighting sports stars and stories, Stafford took home the Best Comeback award. He returned from shoulder surgery last season to throw 5,038 yards, which ESPN cites as the fourth-most in NFL history.

“I just want to say how happy I am, how grateful I am to share this with the city of Detroit, which is on a comeback of its own, doing great things," he said, according to WDIV.

"The city has been through a lot and we’re just one of the teams there trying to make them happy and proud, give them something to cheer for," he continued. "So, this one is for my teammates and the city of Detroit. Thank you.”

Stafford, who took girlfriend Kelly Hall to the Los Angeles ceremony, led the Lions to the playoffs in 2011. While teammate Calvin Johnson was nominated for NFL Player of the Year, he was beat out by Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers
