Bob Schieffer Dismayed At Appearance In Romney Attack Ad (VIDEO)

CBS' Bob Schieffer objected strongly to a Romney campaign ad which used footage of him to attack President Obama.

The ad, called "Hope and Change," hits Obama's negative messaging against his Republican challenger. It opens with tape of Schieffer saying, "When the President was elected, he talked about hope and change. Whatever happened to hope and change? Now, it seems he is just coming right out of the box with these old-fashioned negative ads."

On Sunday's "Face the Nation," Schieffer played the commercial.

"I want to start with something that we didn't know about when this broadcast started," he said. "But it is my understanding that just a few minutes ago, the Romney campaign bought time on 'Face the Nation' during one of our commercial blocks and in some other markets around the country running a new ad, which includes me!"

After the ad played, he said he had been shocked to see it.

"I'm running this not to give circulation to it, but just to state that obviously I have no connection with the Romney campaign," he said. "This was done without our permission. It comes as a total surprise to me and — and that is that. But that's where we are in politics."

Guest Frank Rich joked that Schieffer should "ask for residuals."

"I'll get some blowback, that's for sure," Schieffer replied, adding, "That was a question that I posed to David Axelrod, the President's campaign manager. I wasn’t stating something there. I was asking somebody else a question."

Both major presidential campaigns have agitated journalists with their willingness to use them in ads. NBC and MSNBC issued complaints to the Romney and Obama camps, respectively, for ads which used footage of Tom Brokaw and Ed Schultz.
