Chicago Heat Advisory: Heat Wave, Triple-Digit Highs Return Tuesday (VIDEO)

Triple-digit temperatures could return to the Chicago area Tuesday as a heat advisory has been issued for the city through 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service reports that the high on Tuesday is expected to reach 100 degrees, while the heat index could hit 110 degrees in Chicago, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The record high for July 16 in Chicago is 100 degrees, a record set in 1887, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Relief is expected to arrive in the area Wednesday, however, as temperatures return to the 80s, according to the Tribune.

The city's Office of Emergency Management and Communications is urging Chicago residents to check on the elderly and disabled to ensure their well being in the hot, humid conditions. Those without air conditioning are encouraged to go to a cooling center -- such as a public library or police station -- to help them beat the heat.

The heat arrives in the midst of one of the worst droughts in the state of Illinois' history and its sixth-driest year on record.

Earlier this month, the city saw its third-ever series of three consecutive days of 100-degree-plus heat. Heat-related deaths in Cook County have reached 22 so far this summer, the Sun-Times reports.
