A Pennsylvania teen pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Monday after being arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault and summary harassment following a Jan. 28 fight in which he knocked out a friend, fractured his skull and caused brain bleeding following an argument over beer.
The Morning Call reports that Jeremy J. Kegarise, 19, fought with his friend, Antonio M. Inzillo, 21, in the driveway of a home, where they were attending a party. Kegarise had given Inzillo money for beer, but when Inzillo returned with the wrong kind, violence ensued.
"He bought Yuengling," Kegarise's attorney, public defender John Baurkot, said in court. "He was supposed to buy light beer."
In return for Kegarise's guilty plea, the felony and summary harassment charges were dropped, the Morning Call reported. Kegarise can face up to two years in prison.
Underage drinking is a widely-reported problem on college campuses across the United States. In March, the parents of a 19-year-old who died after a night of heavy drinking filed a wrongful death suit against a Baylor University fraternity.
Hazing rituals involving drinking also have been reported at various fraternities and sororities at prestigious colleges, such as Ivy League schools.
In April, HuffPost blogger Ravital Segal described her rush experience at Dartmouth. She wrote:
We were guided into the back seat of a car and one of our future sisters commanded us to chug the alcoholic punch that had been pre-prepared for each of us in individual 64-ounce water bottles. Simultaneously, I was handed numerous vodka shots from the older sister sitting in the front seat.
