Chain Food Showdown: The Best & Worst Chicken Strips At America's Casual Dining Restaurants

HuffPost Food recently went on a tour de force of some of America's major casual dining chains. Regardless of your taste in cuisine, chances are you've found yourself at a casual dining restaurant before, whether one is your go-to Friday night spot or a road trip-only meal. These national chains pride themselves on creating a menu that can appeal to a wide variety of eaters. But are these calorie-heavy appetizers worth it? We pitted eight appetizers from eight casual dining chains against each other to find out. Week 8: Chicken Strips.

What originally turned us on to evaluating the most common fare at the biggest restaurant chains was a surface level understanding of how many major casual dining restaurants work. In some of these chains, food is often pre-prepared in a central kitchen, and then frozen to be shipped and re-heated across the country. We read fascinating tales of this process, such as the section on Applebee's in Tracie McMillan's "The American Way Of Eating" or the discussion of Chili's in David Kessler's "The End Of Overeating."

Perhaps the viral review of an Olive Garden in Grand Forks, North Dakota proved just how much casual dining can resonate with the American audience.

In our evaluation of American casual dining food, we chose eight prominent chains that serve similar American fare across the country: Applebee's, The Cheesecake Factory, Chili's, Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood, Red Lobster, Ruby Tuesday and T.G.I. Friday's. Although locations and number of outlets vary, we felt that all eight epitomized the casual dining experience, perhaps best evidenced by the amount of dish overlap on all menus. In choosing which dishes to evaluate, we stuck to what we deemed the most sought-after appetizers.

As we kept eating our way through the various menus, we were surprised by the huge range across the food categories. While certain chains overall performed better than others, the more appropriate comparison was really about single dishes, rather than a restaurant as a whole.

For our eighth installment, we examined chicken strips. It was no surprise that all eight chains served chicken strips, but it was surprising how bad some of them were. From the strangely sweet to dry meat, it's apparently hard to get chicken strips right. But when they're good, they're some of the best comfort food out there.

"Standard approach but bad flavor from the frying." "Plump, moist chicken strips with the desired crispy and thick breading." "Tender meat, crunchy coating, but forgettable." "Good thick batter but awful honey mustard sauce." "Strangely reminiscent of Matzo, but not in a good way."

  • 5th Place, Ruby Tuesday's, 2.75

"Good batter." "Limp, anemic." "Good taste but crust was a little too pale and doughy." "Sandy. Blech."

  • 4th Place: Hard Rock Cafe, 3

  • 2nd Place Tie: Applebee's, 4

"A little dry on the inside, but delicious crust." "Good, crispy breading. Served piping hot." "Tender, moist meat, great brown crunchy crust." "Crunchy outside, tender inside, but lacking salt."

  • 2nd Place Tie: TGI Friday's, 4

"Just what I want. Pleasant ratio between breading and chicken." "A category leader." "Chicken almost juicy enough." "Very flavorful, tender, moist and nice coating -- maybe too bready." "Nice freshly-fried texture."

  • WINNER: Chili's, 4.8

"Nicely crispy, great especially with honey mustard sauce." "Could be crunchier, but the meat couldn't be much better." "The best chicken strips I've ever had. Hands down, no question about it." "Great batter, real chicken taste."

Editor's Note: We dined at all chains anonymously -- no restaurant knew that we were evaluating the cuisine. The chains we visited were all located in the New York metro area.

I wouldn't say Applebee's has the best chicken strips. They made the wife sick last night and most of today.

The very reason that Chicken Strips are NOT on my list of favorites!!
Too much batter - then a 'void' of tepid flour PASTE -
then, finally, cold, underdone CHICKEN (at least I think it's chicken!!)

Hmmm, I LOVE the chicken strips at Planet Hollywood. Always go there for them when at WDW.

Love Red Robin's food too, but I suspect it wasn't on the list because it's not really a national chain like the rest.

I like Red Lobster's french fries. They're skinny but tasty. I get them most of the time with a garden salad and eat a couple biscuits. I never get seafood.

Best fried chicken mashed potatoes and gravy and okra. Big Nells restaraunt. Big Nell was raised on Sand Mountain Alabama. Born in 1927 She learned to cook chicken and fixins like no restaurant could ever prepare. Big Nell died in 1977 Miss you Ma

It seems crazy that we even know this, but Carraba's has the best chicken strips.

Carrabas isn't a chain is it? Only in St. Pete?

Y'all were just way too afraid that Red Robin would wipe the floor with everyone else when you did this, weren't you? Or is it just that they wouldn't offer up any sort of "rewards" for the mentions?

Red Robin isn't a national chain. That is why they are not on the list. There is obviously local and regional places with better food.

Zaxby's was my favorite until I moved to Texas and found Raising Cane's. Either way, they both outperform the restaurants on this list.

If you make a trip to south Louisiana, be sure and try Raisin Cane's chicken strips. They are great. They come with fries, coleslaw, and Texas toast. Cane's sauce for dipping the strips is awesome.

What kind of rating system are you using? What's the difference between "Last Place" and "Not Recommended"? Is eating at Last Place better than Not Recommended? I think you would have been better off with "Eh"..(along with the accompaning hand gesture), "Nah" and "No Effin Way, Dude"
06:31 PM on 07/23/2012
Uhhhhh. Last is last. Last is worst. Last is bottom of the heap. Not recommended just means that a person would not encourage you to try the item. They don't support it. They don't recommend it.

Got it? Something that is the last is the worst. Kinda like my warning people away from a dishonest jeweler. They're the worst!! They are last on the list. There are many jewelers I would not recommend for a variety of reasons but...

Is that the last word on this?

Last place def means this is the last place you should order this item from the restaurants mentioned. Not recommended means better than last place.

Red Robin has TONS of yummy food, and yeah they should be listed. I'm vegetarian and I find plenty to eat there even if it's junk food.

I've never cared much for fast food or big fancy restraunts I would much rather eat at home. However
though despite not liking it much I do try to enjoy it because my family enjoys it.I just hate paying more
than what the meal is really worth, most things you can cook at home for way less. I also hate lousy
service most times the service tells how the food is.

Chili's chicken strips are gross. They are covered in so much puffy greasy batter, that what little chicken there is in there slides out when you bite into it, especially if it's too hot and you end up dropping it on your plate.

I prefer Fridays' best, but one you didn't even mention was the Coconut Chicken Tenders at Studio Movie Grill. THOSE are amazing, not too heavy, and really tasty with honey mustard.
