Crystal Palace Cheerleaders Lose Olympic Bid Despite Receiving Most Votes (VIDEO)

Crystal Palace Cheerleaders Too Hot For The Olympics

The Crystal Palace Football Club's cheerleaders, known as the Crystals, have lost the chance to perform at the 2012 London Olympics -- possibly as a result of their sexy image.

The selection committee for the "Team GB" representative for the 2012 Olympics enlisted the help of Alesha Dixon, "Britain’s Got Talent" judge, to select which cheerleaders would go to the Olympics this year.

On Wednesday, Dixon announced that the North London Wildcats had been chosen to head to London this year, according to Yahoo Sports.

However, the selection process was supposed to be democratic and included a popular vote. That popular vote had the Crystals coming out on top, beating the Wildcats 32 percent to 27 percent.

Wildcats coach Jenny Toghill thinks that the final choice might have had something to do with the Crystals flagrant sexuality.

"Personally I think she wanted something that was not so stereotypical – girls running around in bikinis or short hot pants, shaking their butts and other bits," Toghill told the Telegraph. "What we do is a lot more athletic than that. We are very proud not to have that stereotypical image – that’s why we have males and females in the team. They are dancers and gymnasts, so there is a combination of different skills."

Fans of the Crystals were not so happy with the decision: The Telegraph reports Twitter exploded with hashtags such as #boycottlondon2012, #WeLiveInADemocracy, #TeamGB, #TheCrystals, and #gutted.

The Crystals took their loss humbly, tweeting, "Thanks everyone who voted for us to be Team GB cheeleaders. Despite winning both votes, we did not win. Congrats to North London Wildcats!"

They were also sure to add, "we won the public vote but unfortunately didn't get chosen."

Alas, the Crystals are still riding high, as their version of Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" has soared to more than 700,000 views on YouTube as of Thursday afternoon.
