Older Actors Grab One-Third Of Emmy Nominations

Who says Hollywood doesn't appreciate age and beauty? Among the 100 actors nominated for an Emmy Award today, 32 are 50 or older, and midlifers were represented in all 16 of the acting categories.

From comedy to drama, actors and actresses who are clearly at the top of their game in the second half of their careers scored big in key categories: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, for "Veep"; Ed O'Neill, outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, for "Modern Family"; and Kathy Bates, outstanding lead actress in a drama series for "Harry's Law" (and outstanding guest actress in a comedy series for "Two and A Half Men"). Kathryn Joosten, who died in June at age 72 after an 11-year battle with cancer, was nominated posthumously for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her role on "Desperate Housewives."

With the exception of 39-year-old Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory," the six nominees for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series were all in their mid-40s or older: Louis CK, 44, of "Louie"; Jon Cryer, 47, of "Two and A Half Men"; Don Cheadle, 47, of "House of Lies"; Alec Baldwin, 54 of "30 Rock"; and Larry David, 65, of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
