Dark Knight Shooting: James Holmes' Family Releases Statement Saying 'Our Hearts Go Out,' Asking For Privacy

Suspect's Family: 'Our Hearts Go Out'

The family of the suspected Aurora theater gunman James Holmes have released a statement expressing sympathy and asking that the media respect their privacy.

Holmes' family released the following statement Friday:

Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is cooperating with authorities in both San Diego, California and Aurora, Colorado. We are still trying to process this information and we appreciate that people will respect our privacy.

Shortly after police took Holmes, 24, into custody, a woman in San Diego, Calif. who identified herself as Holmes' mother told ABC News she suspected her son's involvement.

"You have the right person," she said. "I need to call the police ... I need to fly out to Colorado."

Police and FBI agents found Holmes' apartment booby trapped and reportedly evacuated five buildings while trying to disarm potentially explosive material.

Aurora Police have said they haven't released the names of victims, 911 calls or any radio traffic.

An information line has been set up for information on victims or tips at 303-739-1862. Family members looking for loved ones who were at Century 16 Theaters in Aurora are being asked to go to Gateway High School.
