Doctors Discover Brain Mass After 9-Year-Old Boy, Jacob Holdaway, Is Hit By Ball (VIDEO)

It was an average holiday afternoon on July 4, when 9-year-old Jacob Holdaway was hit in the head while playing kickball.

A few days later, when Jacob began to vomit and have headaches, his mother, Stacy Hamilton, attributed the problems to the earlier incident and decided to get him checked out, according to Shelby News. He was given a CT scan.

The doctors had some surprising news. "He said, 'There's no trauma from being hit, but we did find a pretty large mass,' and I was just in complete disbelief," Hamilton told RTV 6. Soon, Jacob was transferred to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, where doctors relieved inter-cranial pressure by draining some spinal fluid. Later, he had a six-hour surgery to remove much of the mass.

However, a small piece remains, wrapped around a nerve.

"(I had surgery) in my brain, so I can feel better," Jacob told RTV 6.

"He is hanging in there. Jacob is a tough kid, and we are currently waiting to hear back on what kind of tumor he has and what kind of treatment he will undergo. He hasn't complained one bit and has been able to get up and walk around after surgery," Hamilton said.

The kickball accident might have saved Jacob's life.

"The doctor told us this is something he's probably had for a while. If he hadn't got hit in the head, who knows what would have happened," his mother told RTV 6.

This is not the only case of an accident potentially saving someone's life.

According to WWMT 3 News, earlier this month, a 2-year-old was taken to the hospital after an ATV accident, where the doctors discovered excess spinal fluid unassociated with the crash and performed potentially life-saving surgery on the girl.
