'Vicious' Dogs Trap Staples Customers, Employees Inside Store

Police were called to an Elmwood Park, Ill. office supply store after two "vicious" dogs ran into the store, cornering customers and employees for an hour.

Police Chief Frank Fagiano says police arrived at the Staples at 1850 N. Harlem Ave. around 10: 51 a.m. Tuesday to find two dogs, an Akita and a Napoleon mastiff, who had chased a man inside the store and were barking and snarling at customers, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Working with an animal control officer from Oak Park, the officers used pepper spray to subdue the animals and removed them from the scene in cages.

No one was bitten, but one employee was hospitalized after suffering a diabetic attack, WGN reports.

Before reaching the store, the dogs had reportedly terrorized other nearby residents, including a landscaper who used a leafblower to shoo them away, Fox Chicago reports. The dogs were described as "vicious" and "foaming at the mouth" by witnesses, but were returned to their owner later that day.

Police say the dogs' owner will be cited.
