Stunning Photos Taken On Salar de Uyuni, The World's Largest Salt Flat (PHOTOS)

Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, is located in the Altiplano of Bolivia, which is 11,995 feet above sea level. On My Modern Met, we saw recent photos taken on the mystical salt crust that reveal just how high that elevation can seem. In the images below, visitors to the Bolivian landmark are captured walking through a naturally occurring optical illusion, appearing as if they are strolling through the sky.

This massive illusion occurs during the rainy season in Bolivia, when the briny Sular takes on a completely reflective appearance as pockets of dry salt interact with water. This leads to an absolutely mesmerizing sight, as visitors can walk across the lithium-rich Salar appearing as if they are standing on top a heavenly mirror. With the salt flat's exceptionally pristine surface and the usual presence of towering tropical cumulus clouds that hover over it, the area becomes a perfect stage for camera-ready hikers with a keen eye for Altiplano's beauty.
