Jay Smooth: Mitt Romney's Awkward World Tour

Last week, Mitt Romney was supposed to head overseas on a simple trip meant to burnish his foreign policy image. That isn't exactly how it went down.

Instead of giving a boring answer to Matt Lauer's softball question about the London Olympics, Romney, who oversaw the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games, criticized the British city's preparedness ahead of the Summer Games, which kicked off last Friday. "The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials -- that obviously is not something which is encouraging," Romney said during an interview with NBC News.

That prompted British Prime Minister David Cameron to hit back at Romney for the statement. "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world," Cameron said. "Of course, it's easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere."

Jay Smooth, the hip-hop deejay and popular vlogger, found himself perplexed at Mitt Romney's string of gaffes over the last week during his overseas trip.

"Human interaction is pretty much unavoidable on a goodwill tour, so the Romney campaign has tried to cushion the blow by starting him off in the easiest place possible — our good buddies in England," Smooth said. "What could possibly go wrong in England?"

Smooth joked that Romney, who has notably avoiding making his policy preferences known during the presidential campaign -- a tendency that has annoyed even conservatives and Republicans -- may be doing the whole candor thing backwards. "I'm realizing now that Mitt Romney is capable of speaking frankly about what he believes," Smooth joked, "but he can only do it when it's the worst possible time to speak about what you really believe."
