In keeping with the Olympic spirit, today we share a competition master plan entry for Rio by Columbia-based architect Luis Callejas. Although Callejas has been practicing professional for four short years, he has already made quite an impression on the architecture world. In that time, Callejas has designed and realized two of the most relevant recent projects in Latin America for public sports infrastructure: The aquatic center for the South American Games of 2010, and the complete renovation of the main soccer stadium in Bogota, Colombia. For his scheme for Rio’s Olympic Park master plan, the park functions sectionally as the sporting functions – both the main areas and the support spaces – are organized in a stacked manner rather than pulled apart in plan. This allows for a fluid and open space for audiences, and creates “No icons but one big vital scenario halfway between a small city and a big park.”
One component of the master plan incorporates Rio’s old F1 Racing track which will be recycled to function as the main pedestrian path through the park.
The accommodations for the athletes are intended to serve as a model for future urbanization, as they utilize the privileged plots of the site with the hope of being maintained after the Games. The other permanent facilities, such as the welcome center, medical facilities and sponsors’ village, are located under the public roof.
For the temporary program, the hockey areas and the tennis court will be transformed into a Sports museum annex/medicial facilities annex, and a sports shopping center, respectively.
The proposal includes a vastly landscaped area which will serve to recolonize other parts of the lagoon with more than 10000 new native trees. The trees in the grid will be permanent to provide constant greenery for Rio.
