Michael Haynes Shooting Death: Cinque Lee Charged In Basketball Star's Slaying

Police charged a 20-year-old man with the slaying of Michael Haynes, a former CPS basketball standout on the brink of a promising opportunity.

Cinque Lee, of the 11600 block of South Vincennes, was charged in Haynes' fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Lee was identified by witnesses as the man who fatally shot Haynes, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Haynes, 22, was gunned down on July 26 while attempting to break up a fight over a stolen necklace on the city's Far South Side. Haynes, who led Washington High School to two consecutive appearances in the city championship game, had committed to play Division I basketball at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.,

Iona representatives said they were "devastated" by the news of Haynes' shooting death, The New York Times reported.

"It’s a shame," Iona assistant coach Jared Grasso told the Times. "He wanted to get out of Chicago as soon as possible. … He was such a good kid. He just wanted an opportunity."

Meanwhile, two men -- Quincey Simmons, 18, and Victor Coleman, 32 -- were fatally shot overnight Wednesday, the Tribune reports. Seven other people, including one 16-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings Tuesday evening into early Wednesday.

Gun violence in Chicago has attracted national media attention this year as the city's homicide rate has spiked 39 percent this year, as of the end of June.

While commenting on the tragedy in Aurora, Colo., last week, President Barack Obama referenced the ongoing violence in Chicago, his hometown.
