'The Real L Word' Cast Member Somer Bingham Sounds Off On Female Beauty And Appearance

'Real L Word' Star On Beauty And Appearance In The Lesbian Community

On today's edition of "Somer Fridays," Somer Bingham of " The Real L Word" offers up her take on women's preoccupation with beauty and appearance, and particularly its relevance to the lesbian community.

"The notion of some universally idealized version of beauty is false, just like the idea some universally recognizable version of a lesbian is false," Bingham says. "It's so easy to fall into this trap of being influenced by artificial beauty that's around us."

The show's producers say Bingham was responding to the recent controversy sparked by Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, who declared that "usually black women that look like me" didn't engage in lesbian relationships.

Bingham adds, "Each person has their own relationship to self and beauty, I think the danger is when we start to project those ideas onto other people."
