DETROIT -- U.S. Rep. Gary Peters has won the Democratic primary in Michigan's 14th District, defeating another member of Congress and three other candidates.

Peters and U.S. Rep. Hansen Clarke ran in the same district after Michigan lost a seat due to population loss.

Clarke's defeat means for the first time since 1965, the Detroit area will not be represented by two black members of Congress.

Clarke's mother was black and his father was of South Asian origin. Peters, who is white, drew much support from Detroit labor unions and pastors of black churches.

The new 14th District includes a large chunk of Detroit and two suburban counties. Three other candidates trailed the two congressmen.

Clarke is in his first term in Congress after defeating then-U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick in 2010.
