Burma, Now Myanmar, Shown In Vintage Educational Movie (VIDEO)

A vintage educational film just uploaded to YouTube shows what life in Burma was like five years before the military coup that would result in the nation changing its name to Myanmar and adopting a hostile attitude toward the world at large.

The clip highlights the daily life of one local and his family, showing rice harvests, meals, market days and other ordinary scenes. It also describes the economic and geopolitical situation of the country during the era, just before major U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

Near the end of the video, a KLM flight is shown operating at Rangoon Airport, now Yangon International, in the country's principal city, set at the mouth of the Irrawaddy River.

Travel to the nation has become a hot topic in the travel industry in recent years, sparking debate over the appropriateness of spending money in a country under military rule.

One Lonely Planet scribe tweeted that the video is bittersweet, given the country's recent history.
