Columbia University Student Sues Ad Agency For $23 Million, Claiming Ad Makes Her Look Like An Escort

Model and recent Columbia University psychology graduate, Carolyn Giles, 30, is suing Volvo, Hertz and her modeling company, Ford Models, for $23 million, according to the New York Daily News. Why? She doesn't want to be confused with an escort.

Giles claims an ad she shot for Volvo in 2007 -- for which she was paid $1,000 -- was also used without her permission on an Australian dating site affiliated with Volvo and called "Fast Impressions." Giles argues the further use of her image violated her Volvo contract.

However, Giles told the New York Daily News she was most outraged by what the ad was selling.

She says the ad made her look like a Swedish escort. It featured her picture underneath a headline reading, "Spend the night with a Swedish model of your choice!"

“It looks like something you'd see in the old yellow pages directories under escort services," Giles’ lawyer, David Jaroslawicz, told the New York Daily News. "It makes her look sleazy."

In the lawsuit, Giles claims that not only was she not notified about the dating advertisement, but also, she didn't get paid for the new ads. Giles, who has modeled since age 18, is suing Ford Models for not protecting her interests, according to Business Insider.

According to the Daily Mail, Giles' modeling troubles are not unique, and recently, several models have sued companies for using their images without permission or compensation.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated Giles' age as 23.
