'Major Crimes' Premiere: 'The Closer' Spin-Off Finds A Different Voice Under Mary McDonnell's Leadership (VIDEO)

'Major Crimes' Premiere: 'Closer' Spin-Off Finds Different Voice

With the image of Brenda smiling in that elevator still fresh on viewers' minds from "The Closer" series finale, TNT wasted no time jumping right into the spin-off series "Major Crimes" (Mon., 10:06 p.m. ET on TNT). It's a scheduling move that left viewers and critics conflicted.

Sure, "Major Crimes" could use the boost from "The Closer" finale, hoping that some viewers will stick around for the new show. At the same time, could it be hurt by the noticeable absence of Kyra Sedgwick's dominant performance airing so closely behind it? Mary McDonnell proved herself a very capable lead as Captain Sharon Raydor, put in charge of Major Crimes. But she has a much more subtle approach.

The premiere picked up a week after Brenda's departure. Interestingly enough, they not only kept much of the Major Crimes team intact, but also the 16-year old kid Brenda set up to help convict Phillip Stroh. Only suddenly he's now Sharon's problem. Not only that, but the character moved in with her and was promoted to a regular cast member. Clearly there are big plans for his character.

Find out as "Major Crimes" continues in its regular time slot, Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
