There was a time when the purpose of college was to help people become widely educated and be more complete as citizens, with a knowledge of the arts, philosophy,the sciences, and other areas. A college education helped advance humanity. Now articles like this advance the idea that a college education is nothing more than advanced job training. After thousands of years of helping mankind to advance, the college system is becoming nothing more than trade techs.

Another sign of the impending apocalypse.

Wrong. Just as education in writing, reading, history, politics and arithmetic was once the mark of a future leader, so as the society advanced the thresholds were pushed up. Interestingly enough, simply educating did not grant the teeming masses a level of intelligence necessary for avoiding of demagoguery and did not make the mob any less panicky, stupid, or fickle.

Not only this, but you are taking a revisionist stance on history. Only fifty years ago colleges were nothing more and nothing less than networking grounds for the rich and the privileged with the rare entry of a gifted kid from the poorer strata. Today, just about anyone can attend given enough patience to put up with crappy cafeteria food.

In a nutshell, the time when college produced "more complete citizens" if there ever was such, was a time before most of the present day advances that we take for granted.
