Kathie Lee Gifford experienced a mortifying episode when she attended the funeral service for the late composer Marvin Hamlisch on Tuesday.
Hamlisch, who died earlier this month at the age of 68, became one of Broadway and Hollywood's most prolific maestros, composing masterpieces including "A Chorus Line" and "The Way We Were."
At his funeral service, The New York Times reported that President Bill Clinton said of Hamlisch, "Genius is rare enough, but a good-hearted genius is rarer still. A good-hearted, humble and hilarious genius? Almost unheard-of."
Gifford said she attended the service along with her husband, Regis Philbin and his wife, Joy, but had to rush to get to Temple Emanu-El in time. "The worst thing you can do, you think, is walk into a service late," Gifford said. "No, the worst thing you can do is what I did when I got in there."
Gifford said she and her husband sat down right next to Philbin and his wife, and suddenly she heard a familiar sound coming from her purse: her ringtone, which is Barbara Streisand singing "Papa, Can You Hear Me?" from the 1983 film, "Yentl."
"Barbara Streisand is singing while President Clinton is speaking!" Gifford said, sounding horrified. "And everybody's looking around like, 'Is Barbara Streisand singing at Marvin Hamlisch's [funeral]?'"
