'The Wire,' Obama Fundraiser Features Castmembers Campaigning For President

President Obama has boldly claimed that "The Wire" is "one of the best shows of all time," so it's perhaps unsurprising that the show's cast is returning the favor.

A number of former castmembers gathered in a Martha's Vineyard backyard Friday, hoping to raise some money for the Obama Victory Fund and inspire others to make it to the polls come Nov. 6.

New York Magazine notes that the actors and actresses were joined by Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, Rep. Sandy Levin (D-Mich.) and Alan Dershowitz. Tickets to the event cost $500 - $2,500, and about 200 Obama supporters showed up.

In a Thursday evening blog post, "Wire" creator David Simon roundly denounced Mitt Romney's record and recent statements on taxes. Romney recently attempted to quell questions about his personal tax record by saying he never paid less than 13 percent, a move Simon found "absurd."

"Can we stand back and pause a short minute to take in the spectacle of a man," Simon's post begins, "who wants to be President of The United States, who wants us to seriously regard him as a paragon of the American civic ideal, declaiming proudly and in public that he has paid his taxes at a third of the rate normally associated with gentlemen of his economic benefit."

Simon wrote that Romney's statements were a sign "the republic is just about over."

One heavy moment from Friday's event: Jamie Hector (who plays Marlo on the show) said his sister would still be alive if she could have taken advantage of Obama-era healthcare reforms (she died of multiple sclerosis). Another cast member, Andre Royo (who plays Bubbles), agreed that accessible healthcare should "be a no-brainer."
